Recharging a neck cooling ring properly: fridge, freezer, water and typical mistakes

How does a neck cooling ring become firm and ready to use again? This guide compares the fridge, the freezer, cold water and a cool room, gives realistic times and shows the mistakes worth avoiding.

Writes for ChillNeck

Has your neck cooling ring gone soft and barely feels fresh any more? That is usually not a defect, it is part of how it works. The material inside has absorbed heat and needs to be cooled down again before you can use the ring.

ChillNeck can be recharged in the fridge, the freezer, cold water or a sufficiently cool place. Which method fits best depends on how quickly you need it and which cooling option is available right now.

More important than an exact number of minutes is the state of the ring: as soon as the material inside is completely firm again, ChillNeck is ready for its next use.

In short: how do you recharge a neck cooling ring properly?

Put ChillNeck in an environment below 26 degrees until the material inside has become firm again. As a guide that is about 15 minutes in the fridge, about 8 minutes in the freezer or around 30 minutes in cold water. A sufficiently cool room can work too.

The actual time depends on how warm and soft the ring was beforehand, how cold the fridge or the water is and how high the ambient temperature is.

What does „recharging“ mean for a neck cooling ring?

A PCM neck cooling ring is not charged electrically. ChillNeck has neither a rechargeable battery nor a disposable one. „Recharging“ means that the material inside cools down and becomes firm again.

PCM stands for phase change material. The material absorbs heat as it moves from the firm to the softer state. Once it is cooled down enough again, it solidifies.

The basic principle of absorbing heat through a phase change is used in technical applications too. The NASA explains phase change materials in the field of temperature control. The US Department of Energy also describes storing heat with phase change materials.

With ChillNeck the process works roughly like this:

  1. The material is cooled down and becomes firm.
  2. You put the ring around your neck.
  3. The PCM absorbs heat.
  4. The ring gradually becomes softer.
  5. You cool it down again.
  6. As soon as the material is firm again, you can use ChillNeck once more.

You will find a more detailed explanation in the guide on PCM in ChillNeck explained simply.

Recharging a neck cooling ring in the fridge

For most everyday situations the fridge is the simplest method. Put ChillNeck in for around 15 minutes and then check whether the material has become completely firm again.

Here is how:

  1. Check the ring for cracks, leaks or heavy deformation.
  2. Lay it loosely in the fridge.
  3. Wait around 15 minutes.
  4. Use your fingers to check that the whole ring is firm again.
  5. Wipe off any moisture on the outside.
  6. Put it loosely and comfortably around your neck.

The exact charging time can vary from fridge to fridge. Against the cold back wall the ring often becomes firm faster than in the fridge door.

For getting ready before work, an outing or a trip, the fridge is usually the most straightforward choice. When you take it out, ChillNeck feels fresh without starting as intensely cold as it would straight from the freezer.

Recharging a neck cooling ring in the freezer

When you are in a hurry you can recharge ChillNeck in the freezer. Around 8 minutes is a good guide.

Right after you take it out, though, the surface can feel considerably colder than it will during later use. So let the ring sit at room temperature for a moment and test the temperature with your hand first.

Keep the following in mind:

  • Only leave ChillNeck in the freezer until it is firm again.
  • Check the ring for damage after taking it out.
  • Let it come up in temperature briefly.
  • Do not put it on if the surface feels unpleasantly cold.
  • Start especially carefully if you have sensitive skin.

The freezer does not change the ring's actual PCM temperature. It merely cools the already firm ChillNeck down further. As you wear it, it then approaches its intended temperature range.

Why ChillNeck deliberately uses 26 degree PCM is explained in detail in the article on why ChillNeck uses 26 degree PCM.

Recharging a neck cooling ring in cold water

Cold water is particularly practical when no fridge is available. That can be the case in a hotel, while camping, at the office, when travelling or at a festival.

Put ChillNeck completely into cold water. After around 30 minutes the material should be firm again. If the water warms up quickly, it can take longer.

Here is how it works best:

  • Use tap water that is as cold as possible.
  • Use a bowl or sink that is big enough.
  • Submerge the ring completely.
  • Change the water once it has become noticeably warmer.
  • Check regularly whether the material is firm again.
  • Dry the outside of the ring before wearing it.

Ice cubes can keep the water cold for longer and speed the process up. They are not strictly necessary for recharging, though.

Cold water is also a good option if you prefer a particularly gentle start. The ring is usually cooled down less strongly than in the freezer.

Can ChillNeck become firm again without a fridge?

ChillNeck uses 26 degree PCM. The ring can therefore become firm again in a cool place, as long as the ambient temperature stays below 26 degrees.

Suitable places can be, for example:

  • an air conditioned room
  • a cool cellar
  • a shaded room in the morning
  • a cool bag
  • a sufficiently cool indoor space
  • a spot next to a cold drinks bottle

Shade alone is not always enough, though. If the air temperature there is 28 or 30 degrees as well, the material cannot become completely firm.

The closer the ambient temperature is to 26 degrees, the longer recharging takes. In a room at 20 degrees ChillNeck therefore becomes firm faster than at just under 25 or 26 degrees.

This everyday practicality is one of the reasons for the chosen PCM temperature. Considerably colder materials need correspondingly colder conditions to become firm again.

How do you know ChillNeck is ready to use again?

The times are only a guide. The most reliable indication is the consistency of the ring.

ChillNeck is ready for the next use when:

  • the material inside is completely firm
  • there are no larger soft areas left to feel
  • the ring has a stable shape again
  • the outer shell is undamaged
  • no material is leaking out

If the ring is only partly firm, it can already offer some freshness. It only reaches its full usable capacity again, though, once the PCM has solidified completely.

It is normal for ChillNeck to go soft while you wear it. That does not mean the ring is broken. It shows that the material has absorbed heat.

Why does recharging sometimes take longer?

How quickly ChillNeck becomes firm again depends on several factors.

The ring was very warm beforehand

A neck cooling ring that has been lying in a hot car or in direct sun for a while needs more time than a ring that was only worn briefly.

The material was completely soft

A completely soft ring has to be cooled down more than a ChillNeck that is still partly firm inside.

The fridge or the water is not cold enough

Fridges differ in temperature. Cold water can also warm up quickly on hot days.

The ring is in a warmer spot in the fridge

The fridge door is often warmer than the back of the fridge. That can extend the charging time.

The ambient temperature is very high

When it is hot outside, water, containers and rooms warm up faster. Even a spot in the shade can then still be too warm.

So do not rely on the clock alone. What matters is whether the material has become firm again.

Typical mistakes when recharging

Only going by the number of minutes

15 minutes in the fridge is a guide value. If ChillNeck is still soft afterwards, it needs a little longer.

Better: Always check the consistency as well.

Using lukewarm water

The water has to be clearly below the PCM temperature. Lukewarm water cannot reliably solidify the ring.

Better: Use water that is as cold as possible and change it when needed.

Mistaking shade for cold

A shaded spot is not automatically cooler than 26 degrees.

Better: Take the actual ambient temperature into account.

Putting the ring on straight from the freezer

Straight from the freezer the surface can feel very cold at first.

Better: Let ChillNeck warm up briefly and test the temperature with your hand.

Bending or squashing the soft ring

In its soft state the ring deforms more easily. Strong pressure can strain the outer shell.

Better: Lay it down loosely and do not transport it under heavy or sharp edged objects.

Leaving ChillNeck in a hot car

A closed vehicle can reach very high temperatures. That puts unnecessary strain on the material and the shell.

Better: Store the ring somewhere cool and shaded where you can.

Using a microwave, hot water or other heat sources

A neck cooling ring is recharged by cooling it down. Heat sources such as a microwave, oven, radiator or hot water are unsuitable and can damage the product.

Better: Only use the fridge, the freezer, cold water or a sufficiently cool place.

Ignoring damage

Check ChillNeck before every use for cracks, leaks or leaking material.

Better: Do not keep using a damaged ring.

Recharging ChillNeck while out and about

There are several ways to get the ring ready again when you are out too.

At the office

Put ChillNeck in the fridge during a break. A clean container or a bag can make sense so the ring is kept separate from food.

At a hotel

Use the minibar, a hotel fridge or cold water in the sink. If the tap water is not cold enough, you can change it several times or add ice cubes.

While travelling

A small cool bag can help keep ChillNeck firm for longer. Transport the ring so that it is not bent or wedged under heavy luggage.

Camping or at a festival

Cold water, a cool box or a bowl of iced water can be practical solutions. Dry the ring again before putting it on.

In air conditioned rooms

If the temperature is clearly below 26 degrees, ChillNeck can slowly become firm again without a fridge. That takes longer, but needs no extra cooling equipment.

Which method suits which situation?

For normal preparation at home the fridge is usually the most comfortable and simplest solution.

The freezer is suitable when you need it especially fast. Remember to let the ring warm up briefly afterwards.

Cold water is practical when you are out and anywhere without a fridge.

A cool room can be enough as well, as long as the temperature stays below 26 degrees. This method usually needs more time, though.

So there is no single best method for every situation. What matters is that ChillNeck becomes completely firm and feels comfortable when you put it on.

Cleaning and storage

After wearing it you can clean ChillNeck with clear or lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Aggressive cleaning products and the washing machine are not suitable.

For storage a dry, protected and ideally cool place works best. In its firm state the ring is more stable and easier to store.

Make sure to:

  • not store ChillNeck permanently in direct sun
  • not leave the ring in a hot car
  • not bend or squash it
  • keep it away from sharp objects
  • not cut or pierce the shell
  • check it for damage before every use
  • keep it out of reach of small children and pets

Handled properly, ChillNeck is designed for many repeated uses.

Why is recharging ChillNeck so flexible?

ChillNeck uses 26 degree PCM. The ring therefore does not need an extremely cold environment to become firm again.

You can:

  • prepare it in the fridge
  • recharge it quickly in the freezer
  • put it in cold water
  • let it solidify in a sufficiently cool place
  • wear it without power and without batteries
  • use it again and again once it has gone soft

ChillNeck is not an air conditioner and does not protect against the health effects of severe heat. It does not stop you sweating either. The neck cooling ring can, however, offer gentle freshness at your neck and make warm days a little more pleasant.

When comparing different neck cooling rings you should therefore not only look at how cold they feel at first. Recharging, temperature range, build quality, size and everyday practicality all play an important role. There is more on this in the guide on what to look for when buying a neck cooling ring.

Conclusion

Recharging a neck cooling ring properly is straightforward. What matters is not the time alone, but that the material inside has become completely firm again.

For ChillNeck you can use these values as a guide:

  • around 15 minutes in the fridge
  • around 8 minutes in the freezer
  • around 30 minutes in cold water
  • a variable time in a cool place below 26 degrees

The fridge is the straightforward standard method. The freezer suits fast recharging, but should be combined with a brief warm up. Cold water is particularly practical when you are out. A sufficiently cool room can work too, but usually needs more time.

Avoid severe heat, direct sun during storage, bending the soft ring and unsuitable methods such as the microwave or hot water. Also check ChillNeck for damage before every use.

That way you can prepare the reusable neck cooling ring again and again and use it for gentle freshness at your neck on warm days.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a neck cooling ring need in the fridge?

ChillNeck needs around 15 minutes in the fridge. The actual time can vary depending on the starting temperature and the fridge. The ring is ready as soon as the material inside is completely firm again.

How long does ChillNeck need in the freezer?

In the freezer ChillNeck can be firm again after around 8 minutes. Let it warm up briefly afterwards, as the surface can feel very cold at first.

Can you recharge a neck cooling ring with water?

Yes. Put ChillNeck completely into cold water. Around 30 minutes is a good guide. If the water gets warm, change it.

Does the water have to contain ice?

No. Cold water can be enough, as long as it stays clearly below the PCM temperature. Ice cubes can speed the process up, but they are not essential.

Why is my neck cooling ring not becoming firm?

The fridge, the water or the surroundings may not be cold enough. A completely warmed up ring also needs more time. Leave it longer in a cooler environment and then check the consistency again.

Can ChillNeck become firm again in the shade?

Yes, if the actual temperature there is below 26 degrees. Shade alone is not enough if the surrounding air is still warmer.

Is a soft neck cooling ring broken?

No. Going soft is normally part of how it works. The material absorbed heat while you were wearing it. Still, check the ring for cracks, leaks or unusual deformation.

Can I store ChillNeck permanently in the freezer?

That is not necessary for normal use. The freezer is mainly meant for fast recharging. For storage, follow the current usage instructions and let the ring warm up briefly after the freezer.

Can I wear the ring immediately after recharging?

After the fridge or cold water that is usually possible, as long as the temperature feels comfortable. After the freezer you should let ChillNeck warm up briefly and test it with your hand first.

How often can you recharge ChillNeck?

ChillNeck is reusable and designed for up to around 300 uses. The actual lifespan depends on handling, storage and the condition of the ring. Check it for damage before every use.
